How a dressed window can add value to your home

There’s no doubt that windows are one of the most important aspects of your property when assessing its value, so it’s surprising that they often go ignored when making home improvements ready for selling. Equally, windows that show signs of damage or ill up-keep can potentially reduce the value of your home, so if you’re looking to add value to your home and attract buyers, consider starting with your windows.

Improve your home

Not only do modern windows look great, but double glazed and secure windows are highly likely to increase the value of your property.

Single glazing is renowned for poor insulation and can be the culprit behind a low EPC rating due to heating being lost through glass that could have been retained - making the home considerably more expensive to heat. This is why modern buyers will seek out double glazed windows and avoid single glazing, as not only is poor energy efficiency bad for the environment, it’s also bad for monthly spending.

Make your property more attractive to buyers

Attractive, clean and up-to-date windows represent an energy-efficient, weatherproof and safe home. Many buyers won’t want to risk buying a property with old windows, with the fear of having to pay-out to amend issues such as unwanted draughts, broken seals and poor security.

Increased security

Modern windows often offer higher security around the home, with toughened glass, steel shoot bolt locks and excluder devices fitted as a standard. These features make the windows harder to enter and dissuade thieves, as they are known for this matter.

Dressing your windows

Choosing how to dress your window is more pinnacle to your room’s overall aesthetic than you might think. Not only should the design be attractive, but it will also ultimately dictate the light that’s cast into the space – therefore windows can change the appearance and ambiance of the whole room.

Curtains and blinds

Choosing between curtains and blinds is an easy decision if you base your choices on lighting and purpose. For example, black-out blinds may be preferential for bedrooms for optimal sleeping conditions, whereas curtains can add style and theme to a living room, without having to block out any natural light in the day.

Venetian blinds are a great option for kitchens and bathrooms, as these rooms can benefit from both lighting and privacy.

Windowsills

Once you’ve got your windows looking dazzlingly clean, make sure your guests will notice them by drawing their attention. Create focal points using your windowsills by decorating with small and simple embellishments. If your window benefits from a larger ledge, boast that extra space with vases, cushions or books.

Shutters

Shutters are a great choice for your windows year-round. In autumn and winter, they can prevent heat-loss and also protect your privacy, while in spring and summer, the movable slats will allow you to control the amount of light and air entering the room.

Privacy screens

For grade listed buildings and period homes, you may not be permitted to install new windows, or perhaps doing-so will lower the value of the home. The same goes for cottages, as modern windows can disrupt the aesthetic and take away from the home’s charm. Similarly, it makes sense to dress your windows appropriately if you choose to keep the original ones. Opt for rustic privacy screens over curtains or blinds for a unique window dressing that harmonises with the home’s interior.
